A Ruthless Killer

Gossip: the number one killer of confidence and trust in America, tell your friends. Gossip is like smiling to a persons face and throwing a knife in their back.
Girls, if gossiping was a sport, we could win gold medals. Guys, you aren’t off the hook on the stero-type “girl” sin. Not even close! All genders are accused of gossiping. Gossip not only is immature and hurtful but it will cost you more than one friendship. You might think “who cares I don’t like this person, that’s why I’m gossiping about them!”
There are two problems with this type of thinking,

  • That’s not how we are to treat one another, we are to love all people (no matter HOW ANNOYING!)
  • Your friends will see that you gossip and wonder what you say about them when they aren’t in the room.
People aren’t stupid! If you are constantly telling them a secret you just heard, why on earth would they trust you with their secrets!

Even adults struggle with gossip, but it is childish. Proverbs 18:8 says “the words of gossip are like choice morsels; they go down to a man’s inmost parts.”
How do we avoid gossip? Follow these three rules

  • If someone comes to you telling you the “latest and greatest” don’t believe it until you have talked to the person they are speaking of!
  • If what you are saying isn’t bringing someone up don’t say it
  • If you have a problem with someone go and talk directly to that person and don’t try to give them a bad name by spreading around the wrong they did to you

    Good advice Pnut.
I always imagine the ‘person of interest’ standing there listening–that nips it in the bud.
Of course I fall sometimes–but do you know who is the biggest NON-gossiper that I know?
    Bubba.
    Yeppers–he refuses to gossip.
He is a better man than I am.
